Social Media Is For Idiots

This was one of my weekly tasks for university. I wanted to share it with you all. Enjoy.

Social media is a parasite. It lives off humanity. It will suck you dry until all that is left is a crumbling, self-conscious mess. If you do not look a certain way or have a certain lifestyle then social media will destroy you.

People try to create a different person on their social media accounts. We put on a mask for the world to see. We make our lives seem better than it truly is. We hide our flaws and insecurities. We don’t want people to see our issues, so we hide. No one posts the bad parts of their day. It is only the good or what we want people to think was good.

Social media is for idiots. It is full of filters and face tune. It is full of people masking their flaws and showing their ‘perfect’ lives. The truth is, people are scared. They are scared that their audience will see the imperfect parts of their lives and run. They are scared that they won’t be loved. If you were to post that you spent the day doing nothing, no work, no make-up, no clean clothes and shared that day after day, people wouldn’t care. They would call you lazy and attack the way you look and act. Why? Because it makes them feel better.

It is full of insecure people who show the best parts of their lives. They vlog and show you their day. The best parts of their day. Behind closed doors, they are hurting. Couples are arguing. They are fighting. They are sleeping in separate rooms. So, when people come out with a “Why we broke-up,” video, everyone is shocked. They are hurt. They were lied to. We all thought they were perfect and we looked up to them and then suddenly they have to show their flaws.

It is for people to tell everyone every little thing they did during the day. It is for people to fight. They attack others for the smallest things. It is full of, what they had for dinner or the silly things they just thought, but really, they were scrolling through their feed and stole the thought from someone with a smaller audience. It is also for people to hurt each other. If someone did something wrong, no matter how small it was, they will get attacked and then it is #BlankIsOverParty. There are people that will attack those who deserve it. It is so full of hatred. Whether justified or not.

Social media is not just for idiots. It is for people to express themselves. It is for body positivity and for those slimmer or plus size women to share their inspiring stories. They will share healthy tips and tricks on how to love your body, so they can help others. It is for people to stand up for a cause. If something awful happens in the world then people will gather together and raise awareness and money for those that need it. It is somewhere that people can share certain insecurities and have strangers and friends help them through it. 

It is a place where people come together. People who would have never met without it are becoming best friends. People who share their passions with each other and share their loves. It is a creative, diverse, wonderful place. It is a place where anyone can be loved.

If social media is for idiots, then I must be an idiot. I have Instagram, where I post what new colour my hair is this week. I have Facebook, where I keep up with childhood friends who I had lost touch with and update people on my life. I have twitter, where I post randomly or during a wrestling show where I get to connect with other people across the world who are watching it along with me. I have a blog, where I post rants about things that have annoyed me or things I don’t like. People care about what I post. I care about what they post.

I am an idiot.
