Retail

A rant.

I work in retail. I work with the general public. I hate the general public.

I know that some people love talking to new people and love interacting with strangers. I don’t. I hate people. I hate talking to people I don’t know. I hate “small talk.” To be honest, I hate most things.

Another thing I hate is the way people treat retail workers. I am constantly having people talk down to me or talk to me like I am beneath them because I am serving them.

I was doing a stock check at work and was told to not serve on tills until it was done. So, I did just that. When I noticed the cue was getting too long, I jumped on tills and left the stock check.

My next customer, a little old man, said to me,

“You shouldn’t ignore customers. You are here to serve. That is your job. Your job is to serve customers. You shouldn’t ignore them.”

I know! He seriously said that to me!

First of all, no that is not my job. My job is so much more than serving you. There are stock checks, online orders, cleaning, putting stock out etc. I have a lot to do today and serving customers is just a small part of that.

Secondly, do not speak to me like that. What gives you the right to talk to someone like that? What makes you so special that it is okay for you to speak to me like that?

Thirdly, please go fuck yourself.

I have had customers speak down to me because I am a woman. I work with technology, among other things, and I constantly have men speak to me as if I don’t know what I am talking about.

I had one man that said he didn’t want to be served by me and would wait for one of the men to serve him.

I had a customer not believe me about a price and said he would get one of the guys to talk to him to tell him the right price.

I even had a man say that it “looked” like I was good at my job but it must be due to a man making me look that way.

Yes, sexism is still alive and well in the world!

Another thing. Smelly people. How do people go outside smelling the way they do? Can they not smell themselves? Do they think they smell nice?

We have some customers who make others leave because their smell is that bad! There are customers who come in genuinely smelling like shit. Have a shower! Please! Bathe or put on some deodorant!

I know that there are people that have a medical condition and can't help but smell, but these people clearly haven't showered in god knows how long.

A common problem I have is people speaking to me like shit or just being rude.

Everyone I work with will tell you, I attract the assholes. They all come to my till! Everyday I have someone who is rude or speaks down to me or is just a dick. Everyday!

Sorry about this rant. I had a good day at work today but there was that one person that had to go and ruin it.

I know that not all customers are like this, I have had some really nice people come to my till. One guy gave my colleagues and I #10 for food and drink!

Anyway, that is my rant.

Here’s to a new day!
